Although “comparevers.exe” is identified internally as copyrighted by Microsoft Corporation, the HerdProtect anti-virus detection site says this is a disguise and that 34 of 63 anti-virus engines identified it as malware. It is a 64-bit process residing in “C:WindowsSystem32” and scheduled to execute as a task named “cvc” as soon as the user logs into Windows. In Windows 10 it has been known to pop up an error saying, “Error during execution: “core_update.cmd”. Access is denied.” Although the names given to this process by the anti-virus engines vary widely, these names are often generic and arbitrary because no naming standard exists. It may be a “hack tool” or a “KMS Emulator” which falsely placates attempts at activation by pirated volume-licensed copies of Microsoft Office programs, although it may be a Trojan which enables access to bank account information.
